AMD builds out its foundation with Ryzen AI 300, Ryzen 200 chips
AMD has typically pushed the envelope in performance, but at CES 2025, the company is also expanding in another direction, with cheaper, lower-performance Ryzen AI 300 and even a Ryzen 200 family that the company is encouraging both consumers and commercial customers to buy. In June, AMD launched the Ryzen AI 300 family, which combined 50 TOPS of AI power with a ton of conventional performance in our Ryzen AI 300 review, including in gaming performance as well. In October, it extended the Ryzen AI 300 to business customers, too. However, AMD built out its high-end Ryzen AI 300 series first, with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (12 cores/24 threads) and the Ryzen AI 9 365 (10 cores/20 threads). Today, it does the opposite, with the launch of four new Ryzen AI 300 series chips -- two each for consumers and business customers -- as well as seven new Ryzen 200 chips to provide slower, less expensive alternatives.
Windows 11's big 2024 Update: How and when you'll get it
Microsoft announced the beginning of the rollout of the Windows 11 2024 Update (version 24H2) today, but it may be a while before you get it. Microsoft is implementing what it's calling a "phased rollout" of the Windows 11 2024 Update and the first phase will begin "over the coming weeks," said John Cable, Microsoft's vice president of program management, Windows servicing and delivery, in a blog post on Tuesday. The Windows 11 2024 Update will be available to everyone and not just those who have bought a Copilot PC. But Copilot PC owners will be among the first to sample new Windows experiences that Microsoft will subsequently launch, with the goal of pushing them out to as many as possible by the 2024 holiday season. If you wish to be among the group that upgrades to the Windows 11 2024 Update/ Windows 11 24H2 as quickly as possible, follow the same best practices as you have previously. Your PC will need to be upgraded to either Windows 11 22H2 or Windows 11 23H2 and updated.
Rembrandt's Night Watch uncropped by AI 300 years after it was trimmed
A mixture of artificial intelligence and painstaking research has allowed researchers to restore Rembrandt van Rijn's The Night Watch to its original size, the Associated Press reports, centuries after it was trimmed down to fit in a smaller wall. The work was conducted as part of the Operation Night Watch project, and the results are being exhibited in the Honor Gallery in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, which sees the original painting flanked by printed strips filling in the lost sections. The Night Watch was originally completed in 1642, after which it was hung in the club house of the civil militia it was based on. But 70 years later it was moved to a new location, where there wasn't space for the whole painting and it was unceremoniously cropped to fit. A significant portion was removed from its left-hand side, along with slivers of its top, bottom, and right.
